Hunger Free Hopkins County

The Summer Meal Program grew in 2015!

The Y sponsored a total of 50 sites this summer, including 4 mobile routes with 17 stops.  The YMCA served over 50,000 meals this summer!  The Y ran sites in Madisonville, Hanson, Mortons Gap, Nortonville, White Plains, St. Charles, Dawson Springs, and we were able to reach rural areas thanks to our mobile routes.

The Y’s anti-hunger work began over 25 years ago thanks to Hopkins County Family YMCA CEO, Ed Wallace.  Seeing the gap of hunger first hand in community youth was a call to action he couldn’t ignore.  Through the Walmart Foundation and Y-USA grants, the Y has continued to expand the Summer Food Service Program and ensure that 25% of the kids in Hopkins County access a nutritious meal during out-of-school times.

We know there is still work to do, so we created the Hunger Free Hopkins County Initiative.  If you know of an underserved area where we could start new sites or if you have suggestions to enhance our summer or year-round site programs, we would love to hear from you!

A huge help came to us this summer, thanks to our new Outreach Coordinator, Tori Wallace!  Tori received her Dietetics Degree from the University of Kentucky in May, and joined our team immediately after.  She’s been a huge asset to the Hopkins County Family YMCA and our Summer Meal Program!

We just finished tallying up our numbers for Summer 2015 and are now gearing up for our year-round Meal Program!
